Derwent Valley
This beautiful setting in the Peak District was made famous by the ‘Dam Busters’ WWW2, used by pilots to practice low level fights for operation Chastise, and also in the making of the film ‘The Dambusters’.
We had recently had a lot of rainfall, so we decided to venture to the Valley, which is not too far away, take in the countryside and stretch our legs – and also give the camera lenses some exercise.
Today the reservoir was particularly swollen, its waters tumbling with force down the wall of the dam. It was surprising to see the still waters of the reservoir on one side and the water’s fall on the other. The images capture the speed of the water and the volume as it tumbles over the top. We walked around the side of the reservoir towards the second dam. The images are processed in black and white, to match the bleakness of the day.
Two weeks later, after a heavy snowfall, we ventured over the Snake Pass (breaking all rules) as the pass was closed. The daredevil in the photographer won and we had a safe and successful ride over the pass. We again were tempted towards the reservoir; the roads looked completely different, white with a blanket of snow. The snow was beautiful, un-trodden in most places, as there were very few people there at the time.
